Meganisi has always lived in the shadow of the fame of Lefkada and the glamour of cosmopolitan Scorpios. However, this is changing and Meganisi is coming up to represent the purest feeling and natural beauty of an Ionian destination, a window through the past. There are three traditional settlements in the island, three picturesque ports and numerous beaches with characteristic turquoise waters accompanied with a laid back local life. It is a paradise fit for vacations. Meganisi is the greater among a complex of islands (others are Scorpios, Scorpidi, Thelia, Kithos etc) just ashore of Lefkada.
The three settlements namely Katomeri, Spartochori and Vathi, each with its own port, have a pure Ionian architecture and expire a typical charm. Despite the small of its size, Meganisi is gifted with many beaches with crystalline waters, especially at the Northern part, where the shape of the shoreline creates small natural basins.
The islands most well-known beaches are Limonari, Elia, Beretta, Loutrolimni, Ai Giannis, Spelia, Pasoumaki, Ambelakia, Atherinos and Pharos. The rest are only accessible by renting a boat, an adventure that we highly suggest. For the more adventurous, you can also visit and dive into Papanikolis?s cave, a sea cave used as a submarine lair during World War II.
A strait of 4 nautical miles divides Meganisi with Nidri, which is 16 km from the city of Lefkada. There are daily scheduled Ferry trips to Nidri (Spelia -Vathi) from 7:00, that offer a unique view of the islands of Scorpios and Madouri and admire the islandic complex. Finally, you have the option to book daily boat trips to Ithaca and Kefalonia.
